Date night goes off the rails when one couple gets wrapped up in a crime in progress, in this “hilarious” (People) new novel from the USA Today bestselling author.

When Jane and Dan score dinner reservations at the renowned and expensive La Fin du Monde (The End of the World) Jane thinks it’s as good a place as any to tell Dan she wants a divorce. The mother of two feels unneeded by her teenagers, and her writing career has screeched to a halt. Her one published novel sold under five hundred copies. Worse? She’s pretty sure Dan is cheating on her.
But before they even get to the second course, an activist group bursts into the dining room. Jane is shocked—and not just because she’s in a hostage situation the likes of which she’s only seen in the movies! Nearly everything the disorganized and bumbling activists say and do is right out of the pages of her failed book. Even Dan (who Jane wasn’t sure even read her book) admits it’s eerily familiar.
Which means Dan and Jane can predict what’s going to happen next. And they’re the only ones who can stop it. This wasn’t what Jane was thinking of when she said “’til death do us part” all those years ago, but if they can survive this, they can survive anything—even marriage.

Oakley (The Mostly True Story of Tanner & Louise) explores midlife dissatisfaction in this disappointing tale of a married couple’s date night gone wrong. To celebrate 20 years of marriage, Jane and Dan stray from their usual anniversary dinner at Macaroni Grill to dine at the world-famous La Fin Du Monde, a choice far above their pay grades as a failed writer and podiatrist, respectively. Jane, certain that Dan is cheating on her and unfulfilled as a mother of two teenagers, suggests they get a divorce. Before he can respond, the restaurant is invaded by a group of masked ecoterrorists. It turns out the group is targeting a billionaire tech tycoon who’s on his way there to meet his wife, which means everyone has to wait. Jane realizes two things: first, the situation is eerily similar to the plot of her poorly received book, Tea Is for Terror, and second, one of the terrorists is her teenage daughter, Sissy, whose voice she and Dan recognize. The plot twists become increasingly far-fetched as the narrative veers from the initial commentary on capitalism and environmental issues to humdrum depictions of marital woes brought about by Jane’s discovery of the truth behind her suspicions about Dan. It’s a miss. Agent: Stephanie Kip Rostan, Levine Greenberg Rostan.

Jane knew that her anniversary dinner with Dan would be interesting, especially because, after 19 years of marriage, she plans to ask for a divorce. She did not, however, anticipate armed environmental activists taking over the restaurant and holding them hostage. Even more intriguing, the terrorists' plans seem to mirror the plot of Jane's failed first novel, a fact Dan would have noticed too, if only he'd read it. Instead, he's preoccupied with sorting out why his teenage daughter appears to be one of their captors. What kind of wild kismet has landed them in this mess, and how can they possibly escape? Oakley (The Mostly True Story of Tanner & Louise) presents a funny, fast-paced relationship fiction. A periodic countdown to the "end of the world" builds an exciting tension that will keep listeners on the edge of their seats. Narrator Huber gives an expressive performance of this intricate, engaging story full of heart and humor. VERDICT This audio will appeal to listeners seeking a relationship fiction about marriage, motherhood, and midlife crises. Recommended for fans of Sophie Kinsella, Carolyn Prusa, and the movie Date Night, starring Steve Carell and Tina Fey.--Lauren Hackert

Jane and Dan are celebrating their wedding anniversary with a special dinner at a renowned restaurant frequented by A-listers and tycoons. Dan thinks it’s their 20th anniversary; Jane knows it’s 19 years and that she’s going to ask for a divorce during dinner. She is tired of being a failed author (having sold few copies of her first and only book published six years ago) and feeling like nothing more than a wife and mother who is taken for granted. But dinner doesn’t go to plan. Just after she asks Dan for a divorce, a group of masked intruders carrying guns invades the exclusive restaurant and takes them hostage. Jane is further shocked when the situation starts to unfold exactly like her plot, even down to the captors uttering some of her dialogue. Cut off from the world, only Jane (and Dan, if he read her book, which Jane doubts) knows what will happen next – allowing her to potentially save the situation, as well as her marriage. Jane and Dan at the End of the World blends witty and poignant observations about the ups and downs of marriage with more serious commentary on politics, wealth and climate change. A fun read.
